Why You May Want Your Teeth Whitened
On top of a confidence boost, having bright white teeth can also be desired for other reasons, including:
 |
Having too much fluoride when your teeth were developing, leaving your teeth darker
|
 |
Stains on your teeth that are yellow or brown
|
 |
The outside layers of your teeth are worn down
|
 |
Medically-induced staining from medications like tetracycline |
Some people have their lifestyle and diets to blame for darker teeth.
It could be that you happen to drink too much tea or coffee, or maybe you enjoy the occasional glass of red wine. Some people smoke, and that is largely responsible for stained teeth.
When you come in to our offices to get your teeth whitened, expect two visits.
During the first visit, we will explain the entire procedure to you, and we will create a mold of your mouth. That mold will be used to create trays that are totally custom to your teeth.
During the second visit, we will take those trays and ensure they fit perfectly, making any small adjustments that are necessary for comfort.
We will then walk you through the process of using the gel in the trays and when you should wear them.
You should wear the trays overnight whenever possible, or at least two times each day for 30 minutes each time.
This will be ongoing for a couple weeks, but our dentist will tell you how long to realistically expect, depending on how stained your teeth currently are, and how light you want them to get.
While you are going through the whitening process, it is very common for your teeth to be sensitive, but this should subside within a couple of days of stopping the process.
After you are done whitening your teeth, you are going to need to carefully take very good care of your teeth.
You need to brush them after each meal, floss at least once per day, and make sure you make each visit with our dentist every six months.
If you have been thinking about getting your teeth whitened, or are curious about the

Your smile will be grateful you did!
FAQs
What is professional teeth whitening?
Professional teeth whitening is a cosmetic dental treatment designed to remove stains and discoloration from teeth, helping patients achieve a brighter smile. At Long Island Smile, our dental team uses professional-grade whitening solutions that can provide more noticeable and consistent results than many over-the-counter products.
What causes teeth to become stained or discolored?
Teeth can become stained for many reasons, including consuming coffee, tea, red wine, and other dark-colored foods and beverages. Tobacco use, aging, certain medications, and poor oral hygiene can also contribute to discoloration. Professional teeth whitening can help address many common types of stains.
How long do teeth whitening results typically last?
The longevity of teeth whitening results varies based on individual habits and lifestyle factors. Patients who maintain good oral hygiene and limit exposure to stain-causing foods, beverages, and tobacco products often enjoy longer-lasting results. Regular dental visits can also help preserve a brighter smile.
Am I a good candidate for professional teeth whitening?
Many adults with healthy teeth and gums are good candidates for professional teeth whitening. During your consultation at Long Island Smile, our dentists will evaluate your oral health, discuss your goals, and determine whether whitening is the most appropriate treatment for your smile.
Does professional teeth whitening work on all types of stains?
Professional teeth whitening is highly effective for many surface stains and discoloration caused by food, beverages, and aging. However, some deep or intrinsic stains may respond differently. Our dental team can assess the nature of your discoloration and recommend the most suitable cosmetic treatment options.
How can I maintain my teeth whitening results?
To help maintain your whitening results, brush and floss regularly, attend routine dental checkups, and limit foods and beverages known to cause staining. Following the recommendations provided by our dental team at Long Island Smile can help keep your smile looking bright and healthy.
